About Us

The Fred Hollows Foundation (UK) is a registered charity which seeks to eradicate avoidable blindness in developing countries. Inspired by the work and example of the late Professor Fred Hollows, The Foundation was established in the United Kingdom in 1999 with a vision of a world where no one is needlessly blind. We use a sustainable development approach to achieve our objectives.

Every year millions of people in developing countries go blind due to lack of access to simple treatment and millions more remain blind due to lack of access to simple surgery.

To date, internationally, The Fred Hollows Foundation has helped restore sight to over one million people in developing countries. However, there are still more than 37 million people worldwide who are blind, three quarters of whom could have their sight restored with comparatively simple treatment or surgery.

In 2006, The Fred Hollows Foundation (UK) established a fully staffed office in Malpas, South Cheshire to manage fundraising activities. Currently we are committed to funding a new Community Eye Centre in Okhaldhunga, Nepal over the next 5 years. Eye Health program activites will be developed in the future.

In 2007, the Board of Trustees welcomed Nick Crane as a Trustee. He joins founding Trustees Phil Brown and Simon Fuller. The Board of Trustees will make further appointments in the near future thereby expanding the level of expertise that can be drawn upon. A strategic plan is currently being developed to direct our activities and help us build on our Mission Statement:

  1. To prevent or cure blindness in developing countries as efficiently as possible.
  2. To work with and train local people to create sustainable eye care structures as envisioned by Professor Fred Hollows.
  3. To mix dynamism with flexibility, adapting to new techniques and needs, as they occur.
