Richard is sailing through the Southern Ocean on a gruelling 4,750km month-long race as part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, the only round the world yacht race for non-professional sailors.
Joining the crew on board the ‘Singapore’, if all goes to plan Richard will arrive in Australia around the 26th October.
“I can’t quite believe I’m about to sail through the Southern Ocean, I’m both nervous and very excited," says Richard.
"I’m raising money for The Fred Hollows Foundation (UK) because I have had personal experience of eye problems, and understand how lucky we are to have access to health care.
"Without the work of pioneers like Fred Hollows and his legacy Foundation, for people in developing countries with eye diseases, the future is little or no vision.”
There are 39 million blind people in the world and it is people like Richard who are helping tackle this by raising awareness of the problem - and as an experienced mountain climber, we think Fred would have appreciated Richard’s adventurous journey.
Good luck Richard Warburton, and thank you!
